Tesla Robotaxi App Lets Riders Choose Between Cybercab and Model Y

Tesla has updated its Robotaxi app to display both the two-seat Cybercab and four-seat Model Y side by side, enabling riders to select their preferred vehicle before booking. Screenshots from Thursday show the in-app interface in Austin, where users can choose a Cybercab for two passengers or a Model Y for larger groups. Tesla describes Cybercab as its first purpose-built autonomous vehicle, emphasizing safety, accessibility, and comfort.

The distinction between these vehicles extends beyond appearance. Cybercab features no driver controls, butterfly doors, wheelchair-accessible low seating, expanded trunk space for assistive devices, and braille-marked handles. Model Y Robotaxis, by contrast, are converted production SUVs that retain steering wheels and pedals. These vehicles have operated the service in Austin since mid-2025 and later expanded to Dallas, Houston, and parts of Florida.

The unified app manages booking, payment, and cabin settings for both vehicles, with Cybercab offering phone-based door opening and voice controls. While Cybercab currently has limited availability—initially concentrated in Austin with a smaller fleet compared to Model Y—the app change reflects Tesla's shift toward a mixed-vehicle platform. This approach allows Tesla to match vehicles to trip requirements: Cybercab targets single or two-person journeys where its compact design and lower operating costs offer advantages, while Model Y serves larger groups or those needing extra cargo space.
