Tesla Robotaxi to Operate 24/7: Timeline Emerges for Round-the-Clock Service

Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's Vice President of AI, disclosed plans for round-the-clock Robotaxi operations following the launch of Cybercab rides in Austin on 3 September 2026. In remarks posted to X on 4 September, Elluswamy stated that overnight capability would arrive "next month or so" once additional software components merge into the v15 deployment plan.

The paid Robotaxi network currently spans six cities—Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa—within a 16-hour daily window from 06:00 to 22:00. The shift to continuous operation would represent a fundamental change from daytime-restricted pilot testing to a service capable of operating whenever demand emerges.

Tesla characterises v15 as an architectural step-change incorporating seven parallel improvement tracks and roughly ten times more parameters than earlier iterations. Early versions of the software already operate across the Robotaxi fleet and contain approximately 40 percent of planned enhancements. By July 2026, the unoccupied fleet had accumulated more than 380,000 miles across six cities in two states. That total reached one million unsupervised miles by the 3 September launch event. The company cited an impeccable safety record and no notable incidents attributable to the vehicles themselves during this period.

Elluswamy did not specify which particular feature within v15 would enable overnight operation, nor did he outline a city-by-city rollout sequence. Should the software merge proceed on his stated timeline, 24-hour service could begin in October 2026 across at least certain markets. Overnight capability would test Tesla's claim that camera-based end-to-end neural networks, rather than additional sensors, form the core solution for autonomous vehicle operation in low-light conditions.
