Volkswagen Redirects Production as Electric Vehicle Orders Surpass Petrol Cars in Germany

Volkswagen has announced a major strategic shift in its production priorities following unprecedented demand for its new entry-level electric vehicles in Germany. For the first time, orders for pure electric cars have surpassed those for internal combustion engine vehicles in the automaker's home market, according to German automotive media reports.

In response, Volkswagen is reducing planned production at its Wolfsburg plant, which manufactures traditional petrol and diesel vehicles including the Golf and Tiguan. Rather than targeting 600,000 or more vehicles annually, the facility will maintain production at approximately 580,000 units, with previously planned extra shifts being canceled.

Conversely, Volkswagen is significantly increasing capacity at its electric vehicle manufacturing facilities, including the Emden and Zwickau plants, which will each add at least one additional shift to meet higher demand. Martin Sander, Volkswagen's sales director, characterised this development as a major "turning point" in the automotive industry's transition to electrification.

This shift follows the commercial success of Volkswagen's new affordable electric vehicle lineup. The ID. Polo, launched at the end of April, has already received more than 40,000 orders across Europe. The ID.3 Neo and ID. Cross, launched in April and July respectively, are similarly experiencing strong initial demand. The reallocation reflects a fundamental change in consumer preferences, with European buyers increasingly favoring affordable electric options over conventional powertrains.
